The 2022 Elections were an exciting time for our nation, and we saw significant action from young voters during the Midterm season. Yet, seeing the number of Korean Americans running for public office up and down the ballot was even more exciting.

As of December 2022, at least 72 Korean Americans are serving in the local government across the United States. For example, there are 4 Mayors, 15 School Board members in various counties, 27 Councilmembers in the local legislatures, 9 county Judges, and various local government positions.  

In celebration of our trailblazing community members, KAGC will share the candidates’ stories, accomplishments, and biographies up for elections this year. In addition, KAGC would like to invite you to congratulate these extraordinary candidates for uplifting the community through their public service across local governments.

2022년에 치러진 중간선거는 젊은 유권자들 힘을 느낄 수 있었던 중요한 선거입니다. 또한 선거에 출마한 한인 후보들도 많았으며 당선의 기쁨이 풍부한 선거였습니다. 

2022년 12월 현재, 미국 전역에 걸쳐 최소 72명의 한인들이 지방 정부에서 일하고 있습니다. 그중에는 4명의 시장, 여러 카운티에서는 15명의 교육 위원회 위원, 27명의 시의회 위원, 9명의 카운티 판사들을 포함하여 다양한 자리에서 한인들을 찾을 수 있습니다.

1. Chong Paul Kim, Mayor, Borough of Palisades Park, New Jersey
김종환, 뉴저지주 팰리세이즈파크 시장

 

Councilmember Chong Paul Kim was elected to his first term as Mayor in the Borough of Palisades Park this year. He served as the school board member in Palisades Park Board of Education and councilmember in the Borough of Palisades. This is the first time Korean American candidates competed against each other in a mayor’s election, though he is the second Korean American Mayor elected from Palisades Park.

During his term as Palisades Park Board of Education and Councilmember, he worked extensively with various organizations, including senior communities, churches, and non-profit communities.

김 당선인은 2014년부터 뉴저지 팰리세이즈팍에서 교육 위원을 시작으로 2018년부턴 시의원을 거쳐 이번 선거때 민주당의 공천을 받아 시장으로 당선되었습니다. 팰리세이즈파크 시장 본선거에서 한인 후보들 간 대결하는 것은 이번이 처음이자 두 번째 한인 시장입니다.

2. Joyce Ahn, Councilmember, Buena Park District 1, California
    조이스 안 캘리포니아 부에나파크 시의원, 1지역구

Ms. Ahn was elected to her first term as Councilmember in the Buena Park District 1 this year.

Ms. Ahn has decades of experience as President of OC Korean-US Citizens League and as a City of Buena Park Commissioner on the Cultural and Fine Arts Commission. Also, she served as a 2020 Census Field Manager.

부에나파크 예술 및 미술 위원회 커미셔너로 활동하고 있는 안 후보는 OC 한인 시민권자 협회 회장을 역임했습니다. 또한 2020년 인구 조사 현장 관리자로 일했었습니다.

3. Paul Seo, Councilmember, Rancho Palos Verdes, California
    폴 서, 캘리포니아 랜초팔로스버디스 시의원

Mr. Seo was elected to his first term as the first Korean American Asian to ever serve in the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council.

After graduating from West Point, Mr. Seo graduated from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. He served as a Deputy District Attorney for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

폴 서 당선인은 올해 본선거에서 당선되어 랜초팔로스버디스 최초의 비백인, 아시안, 한인 시의원이 됐습니다.

폴 서 당선인은 육군사관학교 (웨스트포인트) 졸업 후 로욜라대 로스쿨을 나와 LA 카운티 검사로 임명된 후 캘리포니아주 검사로 재직 중이었습니다.

4. Daniel Park, Councilmember, Borough of Tenafly, New Jersey *Incumbent
    박일환, 뉴저지주 테너플라이 시의원

An immigrant from Korea himself, Mr. Park was re-elected to his fourth term in the Borough of Tenafly this year. Mr. Park was born in Seoul, immigrated to New York at two, and has lived in Tenafly since Mr. Park graduated from Tenafly High School and Rutgers University.

Before becoming a councilmember, Mr. Park set foot in politics as a campaign manager in Robert Menendez’s federal Senate election camp in 2012. Mr. Park was also an aide to Tracy Zur Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 2013. Mr. Park ran for the councilmember with the Democratic nomination and was elected as Tenafly’s first Korean councilmember in November.

박 당선인은 올해 본선거에서 당선되어 테너플라이 시의원으로 네 번째 임기를 시작합니다. 박 당선인은 서울에서 태어나 2살 때 뉴욕으로 이민, 8살 때부터 현재까지 테너플라이에서 살고 있습니다. 테너플라이 고등학교와 럿거스 대학을 졸업했습니다.

박 당선인은 시의원이 되기 전 2012년 로버트 메넨데즈 연방 상원 의원 선거 캠프에서 캠페인 담당자로 정치에 발을 디뎌 2013년 트레이시 줄 버겐카운티 프리홀더 보좌관 등을 역임하다 민주당 공천으로 시의원에 출마하여 테너플라이의 첫 한인 시의원으로 11월 당선됐습니다.

5. Peter J. Suh, Councilmember, Borough of Fort Lee, New Jersey *Incumbent
    피터 서, 뉴저지주 포트리 시의원

Mr. Suh was re-elected to his fourth term in the Borough of Fort Lee this year. He was the first Korean-American to be an elected councilmember in the Borough of Fort Lee beginning in 2013.

Mr. Suh began his service career in Fort Lee as a member of the Board of Education, where he served for six years, holding positions as the vice president and finance, technology, and policy chairman. Mr. Suh holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting/Finance from New York University and a Master in Accounting from the University of Phoenix. Following in his family’s footsteps, Mr. Suh’s father spent over ten years as a member of the town’s Planning Board.

서 당선인은 올해 본선거에 당선되어 포트리의 시의원으로 네 번째 임기를 시작합니다. 2014년도에 뉴저지 포트리 최초의 한인 시의원으로 당선되어 지금까지 역임하고 있습니다.

서 당선인은 포트리에서 6년간 교육 위원에 당선돼 시의원이 되기 전까지 일했으며 근무하였습니다. 서 당선인은 뉴욕 대학교에서 회계학/재무학 학사 학위를 받았으며 피닉스 대학교에서 회계학 석사 학위를 받았습니다. 서 당선인의 아버지는 포트리 계획 위원회의 일원으로 10년 이상을 보냈습니다.

6. Jason Kim, Councilmember, Borough of Palisades Park, New Jersey
     제이슨 김, 뉴저지주 팰리세이즈파크 시의원

Mr. Kim served on the Palisades Park Board of Education from 1996 to 2004 and served as a Councilmember and then Deputy Member during his terms. Mr. Kim was elected as a councilmember in the Borough of Palisades Park this year.

Mr. Kim came to the United States in 1975. He also worked as an Assistant Professor in the computer department at Bronx Community College.

김 당선인은 1996년부터 2004년까지 팰리세이즈파크 교육 위원을 맡았으며 2004년에는 시의원으로 2009년에는 시의장을 지냈습니다. 당선인은 올해 본 선거에서 시의원에 당선되었습니다. 

김 당선인은 1975년도에 미국으로 왔으며 브롱스 커뮤니티 칼리지에서 컴퓨터 조교수로 일하기도 하였습니다.

7. Jeff Kim, Board Member, Irvine Unified Board of Education District 4, California
     제프 김, 캘리포니아주 얼바인 통합교육구 4지구 교육 위원

Mr. Kim was elected to her first term in Irvine Unified Board of Education District 4 this year. Seok-ho Choi, a former Board Member, left the district in 2004, and for the first time in 18 years, a Korean American candidate will serve in the Irvine Unified Board of Education District 4.

Mr. Kim is a 12-year resident of Irvine as a second-generation immigrant. He qualified as a teacher at UC Irvine and received a Ph.D. in Education from USC. Also, he taught at Anaheim Union High School District at South Junior High School, as well as in the online Cambridge Virtual Academy as a History teacher.

제프 김 당선인은 올해 본선거에서 단독 출마로 일찌감치 당선을 확정 지었습니다. 최석호 전 교육 위원이 지난 2004년 교육구를 떠난 이후 18년 만에 처음으로 한인 교육 위원이 탄생했습니다.

이민 2세로 어바인에서 12년째 살고 있는 김 당선인은 UC 어바인에서 교사 자격을 취득했고 USC에서 교육학 박사 학위를 받았습니다. 지금까지 애너하임 유니언 고교 교육구의 사우스 주니어 하이스쿨과 캠브리지 버추얼 아카데미에서 역사를 가르치고 있었습니다.

8. Soo Yoo, Member of the Board, ABC Unified School District School Board, California, Trustee Area 2 *Incumbent
    유수연, 캘리포니아주 ABC 통합교육구 교육 위원

An immigrant from Korea, Ms. Yoo was re-elected to her fourth term in the Borough of Fort Lee this year.

Ms. Yoo has been the Founder and Director of an after-school Tutoring and College preparatory academy since 1994. Ms. Yoo earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of California Irvine and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary. Ms. Yoo is fluent in English, Spanish, and Korean languages.

Ms. Yoo has extensive experience as a College Admission Consultant, newspaper education columnist, and speaker for PTA-sponsored college prep seminars at ABC Schools. In 2007, Ms. Yoo founded the American Red Cross, Gateway Chapter. Ms. Yoo has been the Artesia/Cerritos Annual Team Sponsor for American Cancer Society-Relay for Life since 2008.

8세 때 이민 와서 자란 1.5세인 유 당선인은 올해 본선거에 다시 당선되어 2013년부터 ABC 통합교육구 교육 위원으로 네 번째 임기를 시작합니다.

유 당선인은 1994년부터 방과 후 과외와 대입 컨설팅 학원의 설립자이자 원장입니다. 캘리포니아 대학교 UC 어바인에서 학사 학위를, 웨스트민스터 신학교에서 상담 석사 학위를 받았습니다. 유 당선인은 영어, 스페인어, 한국어에 유창합니다.

유 당선인은 대학 입학 상담자, 신문 교육 칼럼니스트 그리고 ABC 통합교육구 학교의 PTA가 후원하는 대학 준비 세미나의 연사로 광범위한 경험을 가지고 있습니다. 2007년, 유 당선인은 미국 적십자, 게이트웨이 지부를 설립했다. 2008년부터 아르테시아/세리토스 미국 암 협회-릴레이 포 라이프를 위한 팀 후원자로 활동하고 있습니다.

9. Sandra Lee, Board member, Cypress School District, California, Trustee Area C *Incumbent
    샌드라 이, 캘리포니아주 사이프리스 교육 위원

A daughter of Korean immigrants, Ms. Lee, was re-elected to her third term in the Cypress School District this year. Ms. Lee is the first Korean American elected for a 3rd time as an Education Board member in Orange County.

Ms. Lee graduated from the University of California, Irvine for her Bachelor’s degree and earned her Master’s of Education at the University of California, Los Angeles. Ms. Lee has served as a public school teacher for over eleven years, and Ms. Lee has served as a teaching coach and has also worked at the district level in the Magnolia School District.

한인 이민자의 딸인 이 당선인은 올해 본선거에 다시 당선되어 2014년부터 사이프리스 교육 위원으로 세 번째 임기를 시작합니다. 이 당선인은 오렌지카운티에서 한인 최초로 교육 위원 3선 연임을 합니다.

이 당선인은 UC 어바인을 졸업하고, UCLA에서 교육학 석사, 2003년부터 공립 초등학교 교사로서 수년간 재직하고, 매그놀리아 교육구에서 교사를 지도하고 상담하는 지도교사로서도 일한 경험이 있습니다.

10. Jason Chong, Board member, Buena Park School District, California, Trustee Area 2 *Incumbent
     제이슨 정, 캘리포니아주 부에나파크 교육 위원

A son of Korean immigrants, Mr. Chong, was re-elected to his second term in Buena Park School District in Trustee Area 2.

Mr. Chong has been teaching for 20 years and was born in Los Angeles and raised in Cerritos. He majored in political science at UCLA, earned a teacher’s license at Cal State Fullerton, and earned his Master’s of educational administration from Concordia University. Mr. Chong has been a teacher in Los Angeles and Fullerton education districts and a technology teacher in Fullerton education districts since seven years ago.

정 당선인은 올해 본선거에 부에나파크 교육구 2지구 교육 위원으로 단독 출마하여 일찌감치 재선에 성공했습니다.

교직 경력 20년째인 정 당선인은 LA에서 태어나 세리토스에서 자랐습니다. UCLA에서 정치학을 전공했고 캘스테이트 풀러턴에서 교사 자격증을 취득하고 콘코디아대에서 교육행정학 석사학위를 받았습니다. 정 당선인은 LA와 풀러턴 교육구에서 교사 생활을 했으며, 7년 전부터는 풀러턴 교육구의 테크놀러지 담당 교사로 재직 중입니다.

11. Rosa Kim, Board member, Fremont Union High School District, California *Incumbent
     김현주, 캘리포니아주 프리몬트 유니언 고등학교 교육구 교육 위원

Ms. Kim was re-elected to her second term in the Fremont Union High School District this year.

After graduating from Ewha Womans University, Ms. Kim has served as a teacher and principal at the Silicon Valley Korean School, the largest Korean school overseas, for over a decade. Ms. Kim has devoted herself to the next generation of Korean education.

Ms. Kim’s grandfather, Woo-jo Yang, joined the Young Korean Academy in 1921, joined the Korean American People’s Association in San Francisco with Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, served as a provisional government council member, and a ceremony member of the March 1st Memorial Preparatory Committee. In 1963, he was awarded the Order of Merit for the National Foundation

이화여대를 졸업한 김 당선인은 해외 최대 한국학교인 실리콘밸리 한국학교에서 10여 연간 교사와 교장으로 봉사하면서 한인 차세대 교육에 매진해 왔습니다.

김 후보의 외조부인 양우조 선생은 1921년에 흥사단에 입단, 도산 안창호 선생님과 함께 샌프란시스코에서 재미대한인국민회에 가입∙활동했으며 임시정부 의정의원, 3.1절 기념준비위원회 의식조원으로 활동했고 1963년에 건국훈장 독립장이 추서되었습니다.

Mr. Song was elected to his first term in the Paramus Board of Education this year.

Mr. Song said, “I decided to challenge the education committee because I wanted to make the Paramus school where I live a place free of bullying,” in an interview.

조지 송 당선인은 올해 본선거에서 당선되어 파라무스 교육위원회에서 첫 번째 임기를 시작합니다.

송 당선인은 한 인터뷰에서 “내가 살고 있는 파라무스 학교를 왕따와 괴롭힘이 없는 곳으로 만들고 싶어 교육 위원에 도전하기로 마음먹었다”라고 전했습니다.
