As a non-profit dedicated to assist active civic participation, KAGC provides key information on the upcoming elections. Please be advised that due to the public health crisis, changes have been made in several primary elections in most states. Below is the up-to-date information on the elections in states in August 2020.

Tuesday, August 4

Arizona 

  • Primary election for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: passed, same-day registration is unavailable.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: deadline to request an absentee ballot passed, the deadline to return completed ballot is 7pm on August 4 to county officials. Voters may either mail their ballot or drop off their ballot at any ballot drop-box, drop-off location, early voting location, or Election Day voting location in your county on or before August 4.

Michigan

  • Primary election for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: August 4 (in-person), registration by other methods passed, same-day registration is available. 
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: deadline to request an absentee ballot passed, but if you register to vote on Election Day by appearing in person to your clerk’s office, you can also obtain an absentee ballot until 8 pm on August 4. The deadline to return a completed ballot is 8pm on August 4.
  • Emergency Absentee Ballot: The emergency must have occurred after 5:00 pm on July 31. If you are requesting an emergency absentee ballot, you may have someone deliver your written request for the ballot to your city or township clerk’s office before 4pm on August 4

Missouri

  • Primary election for U.S. House of Representatives, governor and state-level positions
  • Deadline for voter registration: passed, same-day registration is unavailable.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail passed, but can be requested by 5pm on August 3 if voting in person. The deadline to return a completed ballot is by the close of polls on August 4.

Kansas

  • Primary election for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: passed, same-day registration is unavailable.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot passed. The deadline to return a completed ballot is to be postmarked on or before August 4 and received no later than three days after August 4. Voters can also hand-deliver their ballot to the county election office or any polling location within their county by 7pm on August 4.

Washington

  • Primary election for U.S. House of Representatives, governor and state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: August 4 (in-person only), same-day registration is available
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: All Washington elections are held by mail-in ballot. Your ballot must be postmarked no later than August 4 or returned to a ballot drop box by 8 pm on August 4

Thursday, August 6

Tennessee 

  • Primary election for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: passed, same-day registration is unavailable.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request absentee ballot passed. The deadline to return a completed ballot is 7pm on August 6.

Tuesday, August 11

Connecticut

  • Primary election for President, U.S. House of Representatives and state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: Online/Mail: August 6; In-Person: August 11, same day registration is available. Election Day Registration is not available at your polling place, but is available at a designated EDR location in each town, beginning at 6 am and ending at 8 pm.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: For the August 2020 Presidential and State Primary, all voters can vote by absentee due to the COVID-19 virus, pursuant to the Governor’s Executive Order No. 7QQ. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is August 10 and the deadline to return a completed ballot is by August 11.

Georgia

  • State Primary runoff
  • Deadline for voter registration: passed, if you were not registered before the June 9 primary election, you will not be able to vote in the runoff election.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is August 7, and the deadline to return a completed absentee ballot is August 11.

Minnesota

  • Primary election for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: passed but same-day registration is available, you can register in person at your polling place on August 11.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is August 10, the deadline to return a completed ballot is by 3pm on August 11 in-person. If the completed ballot is mailed, it must be postmarked on or before August 11, and received by your county by the day before the county canvass, which may take place on the second or third day following the election.

Vermont

  • Primary election for U.S. House of Representatives, governor and state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: August 11, same-day registration is available.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5pm or by the close of the town clerk’s office on August 10. The deadline to return a completed ballot is by the close of the town clerk’s office on August 10 or to the polling place before 7pm on August 11.

Wisconsin

  • Primary election for U.S. House of Representatives and state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: passed but same-day registration is available, you can register in person at your polling place on August 11. For voters who register in-person in the municipal clerk’s office, the deadline is 5pm or close of business, whichever is later on August 7.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5pm on August 6, and the clerk must receive the application by this time. The deadline to return a completed absentee ballot is 8pm on August 11.

Tuesday, August 18

Alaska

  • Primary election for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: passed, same-day registration is unavailable.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5pm on August 17 (email, online or fax), August 8 (Mail) and the deadline to return a completed absentee ballot is postmarked on or before August 18 and to be received by August 28.

Florida 

  • Primary election for U.S. House of Representatives and state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: passed, same-day registration is unavailable. 
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot to be mailed to the voter is 5pm on August 8, and the deadline to return a completed absentee ballot is 7pm on August 18.
  • Early Voting: August 8-15, check with your county Supervisor of Elections for the additional days of early voting that may be offered in your county.

Wyoming

  • Primary election for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and state-level positions 
  • Deadline for voter registration: August 3, same-day registration is available at the voter’s polling place.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is August 17, and the deadline to return a completed absentee ballot is 7pm on August 18.

Tuesday, August 25

Oklahoma 

  • State Primary runoff
  • Deadline for voter registration: passed, same-day registration is unavailable. 
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5pm on August 18, and the deadline to return a completed absentee ballot is 7pm on August 25.

Deadlines for Voter Registration in August 

Rhode Island

  • Primary election for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and state-level positions on September 8
  • Deadline for voter registration: August 9, same-day registration available only for the Presidential Election, meaning for this one same-day registration is unavailable.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is 4pm on August 18, and the deadline to return a completed absentee ballot is 8pm on September 8.

Massachusetts

  • Primary election for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and state-level positions on September 1 
  • Deadline for voter registration: August 22, same-day registration is unavailable. 
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is August 26, and the deadline to return a completed absentee ballot is 8pm on September 1. In July, a new law was passed to allow all registered voters in Massachusetts to vote by mail in any 2020 election, with no excuse needed. As required by the new law, a Vote by Mail application will be mailed to every person who was registered to vote by July 1 and who had not already requested an absentee ballot for the State Primary or for all elections this year.
  • Early voting: In-person early voting will be held August 22-28. A list of early voting dates, times, and locations for your community will be posted at least one week before early voting begins. Please check here at a later date for a full in-person early voting schedule.

Delaware 

  • Primary election for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Governor and state-level positions on September 15 
  • Deadline for voter registration: August 22, same-day registration is unavailable.
  • Absentee Ballot or Vote-by-Mail: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is September 11, and the deadline to return a completed absentee ballot is 8pm on September 15 to the Department of Elections County Office of the county in which the voter resides.
